How We Can Overcome Environmental Collapse and Capitalism Without a Violent Uprising

July 2026

Does the Earth need more people, the same amount of people, or fewer people? Provide a detailed explanation for your answer.

Simple questions like that get us close to understanding how to solve the environmental crisis we are in. We tend to talk about getting people to consume less. But the basic equation is simple:

Total consumption = consumption per person × total people

The evidence is clear at this point that total human consumption is far too high and is making the planet less able to support life, including human life. If total consumption must fall, then consumption per person must fall, the number of people must fall, or both.

It is very difficult to convince people to buy less stuff. People are already having fewer children on their own.

If we voluntarily choose to have one child, or none, and openly discuss that we are doing this because there are too many people, we can make the human population begin to decline.

The main reason we have not done this is that our global financial system is built around continued growth. Interest on debt, stock prices, asset values, government finances, and corporate valuations all depend on expectations of a larger economy in the future. Population decline threatens that system.

Choosing one child or none can force the human world into ecological sanity.

This book explains how.
